Vembanad Lake, Kottayam
The Vembanad Lake (or Vembanad Kayal) happens to be the largest in the southern Indian state of Kerala. Spreading over an area of 1512 sq km, the lake is surrounded by three districts – Alappuzha, Kottayam and Ernakulum. A narrow barrier separates the lake from the Arabian Sea. Since the Vembanad Lake is the major contributor to the Kerala backwater tourism, it has hordes of kettuvalloms (traditional houseboats in Kerala) crisscrossing it. During your houseboat ride along the Vembanad Lake, you can also visit the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, a real birdwatcher's delight. The Kumarakom Lake Resort, with its extensive backwaters, lagoons and pool, is a great place to enjoy your stay here.
