Adhai Din Ka Jhonpra
Considered to be the first significant Islamic structure to be erected in India, the monument has many legends revolving around it. Though the structure has fallen upon bad times, it has seven arched walls with Islamic calligraphy works on them.

Mayo College
Built back in the 1873 AD, this college is still being considered to be one of the finest public schools in the country. At the time it was built, it was meant for Indian princes and wards of the colonial rulers.

Penzella Pass
Lying at an altitude of 4,200 m, the pass separates the Zanskar region from the Suru Valley. The camping grounds on the either side of the pass, stunning views from the top and two fresh water springs are major sights for the visitors. The pass can be accessed only between May and September as during the rest of the year heavy snowfall makes it unreachable.

Air/ Rail/ Road Links
One can access the Zanskar region only through the Kargil-Padum Road (A stretch of 240 km). The first 90 km of this road is paved. This road-route remains open between the months of July and November which is also the ideal time to enjoy trekking. Tourists can avail of a thrice weekly bus service from Kargil. Heavy snowfall makes the area of Zanskar inaccessible for the remaining part of the year.

New Delhi based Tiger Balloon Safari (TBS) got approval from the Director General of India (DGCA) in February this year for conducting hot air ballooning safaris in India. Introduced back in the year 1969, the Rajdhani Express happens to be the fastest running train in India. The word 'Rajdhani' means 'capital' and the train is so named because it runs only between India's capital New Delhi and several other key destinations of the country. According to a PTI report, the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department is going to host a winter sports carnival in Gulmarg next month. The event will continue for a week and will include international skiing championships in Gulmarg from March 1, 2009 and national snow rafting from March 6, 2009. Nawang Rigzin Jora, Minister for Tourism and Culture, Jammu and Kashmir, also informed that these events are being sponsored by the Essar Group. He further mentioned that this winter sports carnival will be inaugurated by Omar Abdullah, Chief Minister, Jammu and Kashmir. Participants at the carnival will include skiers from countries like Australia, New Zealand and Canada. On the other hand, athletes from as many as 13 states from across the country will be joining in the rafting event.

Jammu & Kashmir to become an ecotourism hub

The state of Jammu & Kashmir is soon to become an ecotourism hub. According to a PTI report, Nawang Rigzin Jora, Tourism & Cultural Minister of Jammu & Kashmir has declared that the state will work on various projects to make it a hub of ecotourism. Instructions have also been given to the concerned authorities to make ecotourism a theme for sightseeing tours in the state of Jammu & Kashmir.

During his visit to the Surinsar Health Resort yesterday, the tourism minister said, “Our focus will be to stop selfish human interference into our state's serene environs and for this many ecotourism initiatives to protect fragile areas will be taken up.” During his visit, Jora was accompanied by Sarita Chauhan, Tourism Director, Jammu and Soujanya Sharma, CEO, Surinsar-Mansar. The authorities informed the minister that work is underway to develop the tourism infrastructure at Surinsar and that a sum of Rs 20 crore were being spent to develop the tourist friendly infrastructure at Surinsar and Mansar lakes.

Further, the tourism minister pleaded the major tourism industry players and the people of the state to lend a hand towards projecting the hilly state as an eco-friendly tourist destination. The minister added that the issues of climate change and global warming are the major challenges and expert consultancy firms are required to handle the ecotourism projects in the state. “We have to create a balance between tourism and environment so that this vital industry becomes sustainable in the long run”, concluded Jora. �

Shatabdi Express to get broadband connectivity

Indian Railways has plans under carpet to equip all the major long distance trains with broadband connectivity. Mumbai-Ahmedabad Shatabdi Express and Rajdhani Express are the first trains to be provided with broadband internet connection. Techno Sat Comm, a Mumbai-based solution provider, recently presented a demonstration of the customised broadband solution service. Though the company has been providing broadband facility on trains in England, this is its first demonstration on Indian trains.

Named 'Business on Wheels', the service is based on wifi technology. By launching this special broadband facility on Indian trains, Indian Railways aims to assist individuals and entrepreneurs in staying connected and completing their work while travelling. Techno Sat Comm had been conducting a research on the technology for the last four years. After the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Shatabdi Express gets the broadband facility, the next in line will be Rajadhani to log on to the 'Business on Wheels' solution.

Kaziranga park uses anti-poaching vessel to protect rhinos

Kaziranga (Assam) : Authorities at Kaziranga National Park have finally woken up to the grim realities of rhino poaching. Now a special squad has been put in place to patrol the river banks using anti-poaching vessel. The step has been taken to keep a check on poachers navigating the River Brahamputra in search of rhino horns. The vessel, which cost Rs 1.7 million, has been acquired by the assistance of US Fish and Wildlife Service and Rhino Foundation for Nature. "There was a shortage of vehicles for patrolling. We are really grateful to the Rhino Foundation for providing us with this patrolling vessel," said MC Malakar, Chief Conservator of Forest (CCF). The anti-poaching vessel has been provided with all the modern amenities so as to provide long hours of stay to the officials. Poachers enter Kaziranga looking for the horns of the Indian one-horned rhino. These horns are believed to have aphrodisiac properties and are smuggled to China, aside from being sold in the Asian markets. On an estimate, rhino horns can be sold for around $ 35,000/ kg.

Surajkund Crafts Fair 2009 to begin from Feb 1

Launched back in the year 1981 by Haryana Tourism , Surajkund crafts fair or Surajkund mela has now become known internationally. The crafts mela aims to highlight the cultural richness of the country by putting together the finest handlooms and handicrafts products from all across India. A fortnight-long event, the Surajkund fair is organised in the month of February every year at Surajkund in the Faridabad district of Haryana.

Shopping Items at Surajkund Fair
Master craftsmen from all over India gather at Surajkund to display a wide range of handloom and handicrafts. Visitors can buy these items at a very reasonable price, much lower than they would pay for the same items at an emporium. New Rajasthan Tourism Minister emphasises security measures

After the conclusion of the state assembly elections 2008, Bina Kak has been appointed the new Tourism Minister of Rajasthan. Just recently, the tourism minister held a meeting with the officials of the State Tourism Department of Rajasthan. The aim was to get a first-hand update of the activities and the future plans of the tourism department. Ms Bina Kak emphasised that proper and strict security measures should be taken to ensure complete safety of tourists and visitors coming to the state of Rajasthan. She recollected the recent incident of Mumbai terror attacks and said that we should learn a lesson from it.

Jagdeep Sigh, media spokesperson, Rajasthan Tourism informed that the minister also declared that the state tourism department will soon organise a meeting with the government's law and order agencies. The tourism department is asked to make a foolproof blueprint for the security of hotels and monuments in the state. A meeting with the private hotels is also on the cards. The minister later took an update of the Rajgramiya Cooperative Society Scheme and the Tourism Advisory Board (TAB).

Ms Bina Kak further added that only genuine heritage and rural tourism projects are required to be promoted under the heritage schemes. Private sectors are also directed to be a part of the promotional campaign. The state government plans to set up a heritage fund to aid various conservation projects in the state of Rajasthan.

The city of Srinagar in Jammu & Kashmir has a number of places where you can find peace and tranquility. One of these must-see places is the Jami Masjid (or Jama Masjid). The mosque is a great place to connect to one's inner self. Though it is built on a massive scale, it is a structure of great delicacy. Not only the mosque's architecture but it's history is equally fascinating. One of the most significant in Srinagar, the mosque was first constructed by Sikandar Butshikan in 1385. Later, the structure of the mosque was expanded by Zain-ul-Abidin, the son of Sikandar Butshikan. Twice the mosque was destroyed in fire and constructed again to the original design. The reconstruction of the Jami Masjid in Kashmir was done of two of the great Mughal emperors – Emperor Jehangir in 1503 and Emperor Aurangzeb in 1674.

It is interesting to note that these Mughal emperors respected the hybrid architectural design of the mosque. Likir
This is a tiny mountain village in Ladakh. The presence of green fields, willow groves and apricot orchards in and around the village of Likir add much to the overall charm of the place. It is also a popular place for treks in Ladakh. The trek runs from the village of Temisgam up to the village of Likir. Travel on foot to soak up the beauty of this village the most.

Alchi
It is one of the best places in Ladakh to experience the village culture. A small village in Ladakh, Alchi offers you blissful peace and a peak into the wonderful Indo-Tibetan works of art. Spend some time with the villagers and observe their way of life. The village of Alchi lies 70 km west of Leh town, towards the south of the Indus River. Hire a jeep from Leh to arrive here. Buses also ply to Alchi from Leh, at regular intervals.

Sumur (Numbra Valley)
Sumur village is located in the Numbra valley. Though it is a small village, it enjoys a scenic location. A treat for your eyes indeed. The valley of Numbra (or Nubra) features a number of excellent treks for adventure lovers. Sumur village is located north of Leh town in Ladakh. The valley of Numbra is home to a number of temples.

Tso Moriri Lake
It is one of the most frequented places in Ladakh. The Tso Moriri Lake in Ladakh is situted in the Rupshu Valley, known for its heart-stirring scenes and locations. A road drive of 250 km southeast of Leh takes you to this wonderful lake. You can either book yourself an organised tour from Leh to reach here or a hire a private jeep.

Padam (Zanskar)
Visiting the Zanskar region of Ladakh is a favourite of travellers. A number of valley comprise the Zanskar region. The village of Padam is located in the Zanskar region of Ladakh. The village lies close to the major trekking routes in the region. So, during your trek in the Zanskar region, you can easily plan to halt here. The area of Zanskar is accessible only during the summer time. It's good to travel here in a group.

Kerala tourism Department gears up for crisis management
The Department of Tourism (DoT), Government of Kerala has formed a working group for crisis management. The global financial meltdown and the recent Mumbai terror attacks are taking its toll on the Indian tourism industry. The Kerala state government will conduct regular meetings with the working group on a monthly basis.

TOFT to endorse responsible tourism in Indian national parks
Travel Operators for Tigers (TOFT) is ready to endorse and support the key principles of responsible tourism in the national parks of India. Currently, TOFT is working for the cause with six major national parks in India. These national parks include Jim Corbett (Uttarakhand), Bandhavgarh, Kanha, Panna and Pench (Madhya Pradesh) and Ranthambore (Rajasthan).

Global meltdown affects inbound tourism in India
It is for the first time in six years that the number of tourist arrivals in India is showing a decrease. Mumbai terror attacks have also added to the grim picture of tourism. As per official records, the number of foreign visitors to India fell by 2.1 per cent in November 2008 compared to November 2007, from 532,000 to 521,000.

Chandigarh Administration to develop world class 'Aquatic Park'
The Chandigarh Administration is in the process of coming up with a project to develop a world class Aquatic Park. Three acres of land has been acquired for the purpose, adjacent to the Golf Range in Chandigarh.

Assam tourism to focus on lesser known destinations and two tourism circuits
The state tourism department in Assam is all set to promote eco, ethnic and cultural tourism in the state. Major targets include the lesser known destinations including Pobitora, Rajiv Gandhi National Park at Orang, hill station located at Halflong, Tejpur Sibsagar, Majuli Island and Barak Valley. The focus is also on two tourism circuits in the state – Middle Assam Circuit and Buddhist Circuit. �

Wildlife Parks/ Sanctuaries in Kerala

The state of Kerala is regarded as one of the greenest places on earth. More than 26% of this state remains covered with verdant forests. The amazing wilderness and the rich biodiversity of Kerala invites hordes of nature lovers and wildlife freaks from all across the world. The state had to its credit a forested land of around 10,300 sq km. The initiative for conservation of biodiversity was started back in 1934 when the Maharaja of the princely state of Travancore, Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma declared the forests around the Periyar Lake as Nellikkampatty Game Reserve. Later in the year 1950, the game reserve was officially given the status of a wildlife sanctuary. After that, a number of wildlife parks/ sanctuaries and national parks came into being.

The biggest attraction in this national park is the highly endangered ungulate Nilgiri Tahr (Hemitragus hylocrius). Another major attraction here is the nilakurinji (Strobilanthes kunthianus). The flower is unique due to the fact that it blooms at the interval of every 12 years.

Periyar National Park
The Indian Elephant is the major crowd-puller for wildlife lovers here. It is indeed a wonderful experience to watch these elephants frolicking as they gather at the Periyar Lake. A motor boat safari is the finest option to enjoy watching the elephants here.

Silent Valley National Park
The national park forms the basis of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. A number of animal and bird species can be watched here. The park also has mythological significance, as it is believed to be the place where Pandavas and Draupadi spent their exile.

Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary
This is a unique wildlife park in Kerala. It is both due to the dry deciduous and thorny forests as well as due to the fact that it lies in the rain shadow area of Western Ghats. The endangered species of grizzled giant squirrel is a major wildlife attraction here. Besides, the wildlife sanctuary is home to a number of reptilian species.

Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary

Chimony Wildlife Sanctuary

The UNESCO World Heritage Committee maintains a list of sites that have outstanding cultural or natural importance to the common heritage of humanity. Any site which has the privilege of being on this list is termed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A World Heritage Site can be a forest, a mountain, a desert, a lake, a monument, a complex or a city. At present, Italy has the largest number (45) of World Heritage Sites to its credit.
